The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies were the talent July 23 at Campus Martius Park as part of the "4th Fridays in the Park" concert series.
The concert series, which began in June, is on the fourth Friday of each month through August. It is the main attraction for Campus Martius' "Summer in the Park" series that includes various events such as "Lunchtime Arts" with Detroit-area musicians, a happy hour DJ showcase, movies and more.
This week’s “Lunchtime Arts” guest was the WSU Jazz Camp at 11:30 a.m.
This month’s theme for the "4th Fridays” series is “Classic ‘80s” and will feature the roller derby film "Whip It" directed by and starring Drew Barrymore at 9:45 p.m..
Lead singer of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Steve Perry, said he is looking forward to returning to Detroit.
"The last time we were booked to play this series a couple of years ago, the drummer had a personal tragedy, so we had to cancel the show," Perry said.
"It bummed us out. This is a good chance to come back to Detroit and make an actual appearance."
Perry formed the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies in 1989. Their sound is a mix of different genres of music including rock and roll, punk rock, and neo-swing.
Although Perry is attributed to the musical aspects of the group, the unique name was not his idea.
"When we first started out, we lived in a big house with three different bands, there were almost 20 people living in this one house," Perry said.
"We all had our first show together and the other two bands had names for themselves and we didn't have a name for our band. I was listening to old ‘20s jazz and one of the songs said something about cherry poppin’ and a person from one of the other bands said you guys should call yourselves the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies."
Perry and his band mates laughed at the idea but used the name anyways.
"People liked us; it was one of those spur of the moment things that became our name," he said.
Their song catalog for the concert series will include swing music, rhythm and blues, ska and more.
Aside from the concert series, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies are currently working on two albums.
"One album is a swing-rock-a-billy kind of thing and the other is an R & B…pop thing" Perry said.
