Thousands of people crowded the streets sporting pink and holding signs for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Events like the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure give me faith in humanity. Thousands of participants, teams, sponsors and volunteers gathered together May 22 on the streets around Comerica Park for one selfless goal: finding a cure for breast cancer.

People wore shirts that had comical sayings like “Chest Protectors” and “Hakuna MaTATAs” on the front and signs that memorialized their lost loved ones on the back. FOX 2 news had a camera crew perched atop the Hockeytown Cafe with a perfect view of the scene.

In that quick five kilometers (roughly 3.11 miles) that we walked, people chattered, clapped, cheered and sang. It drizzled a little, but nobody seemed to mind. The air was thick with a warm sense of community that is too often absent in our “You in your small corner and I in mine” society.

Check out a photo gallery of the race.
