In a statement delivered on Oct. 26, the Office of the Provost announced the appointment of John Corvino as the new dean of the Irvine D. Reid Honors College following the retirement of the current and founding dean, Jerry Herron.

Corvino, who earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin, is an award-winning professor. His awards include the Wayne State University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and a 2012 Distinguished Professor of the Year Award from the Presidents Council of the State Universities of Michigan, according to the statement.

He has also authored multiple books which focus on the morality of homosexuality, his books include, “Debate Same-Sex Marriage,” “What’s Wrong with Homosexuality?” and “Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination.”

“After a number of discussions with several faculty candidates and discussions with leadership from around the university, John Corvino was clearly the best candidate for this challenging role,” said Provost Keith Whitfield.

Corvino—who is the current chair of the philosophy department—began at Wayne State in 1998 as a lecturer then worked his way up to full professor in 2015.

“I am excited to begin this new role, having enjoyed working with our Honors students in many classes during my two decades at [WSU],” said Corvino. “I am deeply humbled to follow founding [Herron], who has built a fantastic college worthy of the exceptional students it serves.”

Herron will retire after over 15 years of serving the Honors College.

“I have enjoyed working with [Herron] and will miss his thoughtful, caring and compassionate leadership. I have always found him to be the quintessential example of selfless administrator, scholar and gentleman, and we will miss his contributions to the leadership of the university. The university is truly a better place because of his longstanding and steadfast leadership,” Whitfield said.

Corvino’s term begins July 1, 2018.
