Wayne State University police officer Collin Rose has died after he was shot in the head Tuesday night while on-duty, WSU Police Chief Anthony Holt said.

Rose, 29, was patrolling off-campus in the area of Lincoln and Brainard Street when he stopped to investigate a subject on a bike, police said.

"The back-up was en route," Holt said. "When the back up got there, he found the officer on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.”

Rose was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he underwent surgery and is said to be in "grave" condition. He is surrounded by his parents and fiancée, who he had proposed to in May.

"It's very grave right now, he's on heavy medication and a ventilator," Holt told reporters at a press conference Wednesday morning.

After a massive manhunt involving Detroit Police, Michigan State Police and WSUPD, police arrested a 31-year-old suspect three hours after the shooting.

The suspect is known to have had several run-ins with police, including "assaultive-type" crimes which once left an officer with a minor injury, Holt said. In May 2011, he was sentenced to 53 days in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting an officer.

Holt said this incident is the first time in 36 years a WSUPD officer was wounded by gunfire. An officer had been shot in the leg in 1980.

"Many of our officers are younger than 36, so they haven't dealt with anything like this before," President M. Roy Wilson said. "They have a lot to take in and we're trying to be helpful."

The university has set up a counseling service for WSUPD officers as of Wednesday morning, said Holt. Rose, of St. Clair Shores, is a five-year veteran of the department.

"This is a very difficult day for me," Holt added. "In 40-plus years at Wayne State I never thought I'd have a day like this."
