Bakeries in midtown and downtown Hamtramck offering the Fat Tuesday pastry.

Feb. 13 is what is known in some parts of Michigan and across the nation as Paczki Day. Other names for the holiday are Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras. With regards to keeping the tradition of enjoying sweet desserts, on the day before Lent, the paczki is a Polish pastry that has jelly filling inside resembling a jelly donut. The difference is these sweets are three times larger than your typical donut and are loaded with a variety of fillings. Think of rose chip, prune and custard to name a few. Bakeries in midtown and downtown Hamtramck offering the Fat Tuesday pastry include:

Polish Club

For almost 10 years, the Slavic Club has been selling paczki, but now the Wayne State Polish Culture Club, with the help of Alina Kin, a senior lecturer in Polish studies, will be selling a variety of paczki such as custard, plume, raspberry, and lemon on Feb. 13 in the lobby of Manoogian Hall and General Lectures from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The money gained from the paczki sales will go toward Slavic scholarships.

Avalon International Breads

Located at 422 W. Willis St., Avalon creates a wide assortment of baked goods, including bread, pizzas, cookies and cakes, along with sandwiches and coffee. New Palace Bakery

New Palace Bakery has been in the paczki business for over 100 years. Located at 9833 Joseph Campau Ave., New Palace specializes in Polish-style breads, pastries and cakes. When Fat Tuesday approaches, New Palace Bakery offers just about every flavor under the sun including raspberry, strawberry, plum, apple, apricot and so much more. Specialty fillings for this year include strawberry cheesecake, fruity pebbles and cocoa puffs. On Paczki Day New Palace will be opening at 3 a.m. and no set closing time.

New Martha Washington Bakery

Beginning the week before and on Fat Tuesday, one of Hamtramck’s famous paczki bakeries will be offering a large variety of paczki flavors, including buttercream, lemon, raspberry, blueberry, cherry, apple, strawberry, grape, rose chip and others. Located at 10335 Joseph Campau Ave., New Martha Washington Bakery has been in business since 1925. Business hours include Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
