“I like that it is located downtown because I feel that it has developed so well over the past few years and it’s fun to see so many people there."

The annual Detroit Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Nov. 17 from 5 p.m. to midnight. The event, which will take place in Campus Martius Park, is free and open to the public. This year’s Christmas tree is a 61-foot-tall Michigan grown Norwegian spruce tree, according to the Detroit Free Press. The tree is currently situated in Campus Martius Park and is awaiting the lighting ceremony.

Charles Collins, a Wayne State University freshman majoring in urban studies, said he has never attended Detroit’s tree lighting, as he has recently moved to the city. However, he said that attending this year’s tree lighting is on his agenda.

“I like that it is located downtown because I feel that it has developed so well over the past few years and it’s fun to see so many people there. Plus, Campus Martius seems to provide a very unique, active atmosphere, as it’s in the heart of downtown,” said Collins. “I think this event brings the community together since this is an event that appears to be something many people can be involved in.”

Alexandra Davis, a WSU freshman who is undecided on a major, said she has attended the Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony in the past and plans on going again this year.

“I think it’s a great event that brings the community together,” said Davis. “I think Campus Martius is a perfect location because it’s the center of everything happening in Detroit.”
