Magic Stick on May 14

Skating Polly, a sister duo from Oklahoma made up of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, formed in 2009.

Skating Polly will be playing a show at the Magic Stick on Sunday, May 14. Skating Polly is a band composed of two step-sisters from Oklahoma: Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse along with the recent addition of their brother Kurtis. Beginning when Mayo was 9 and Bighorse was 14, the duo made music they labeled as ‘Ugly Pop.’ The South End had a chance to talk with Mayo and Bighorse about their inspiration and their upcoming trip to Detroit.

TSE: So how did you originally come up with ‘Skating Polly’?

Mayo: “When we were young we made up this whole fake world and that was the Skating Polly world. We were going to have code names, I was going to be Kate and Peyton was going to be Polly, and we had a comic strip to go with our band and so whenever we would hand out fliers for our show it would have these characters. We had a sun that was in love with a flower, and it was just weird. Weird things that we didn’t really think about and things that just came to us. I don’t know what it was.”

TSE: How did you initially find motivation to make music and what advice would you give to those who want to make music?

Mayo: “I really loved singing pretty much when I started talking I started singing and writing songs, like not really writing songs but you know just singing things to myself and that’s kind of what kicked me into writing songs. I could sing my own songs and that’s what kicked me into playing instruments, so I could write songs to sing. My advice for others, I would just say, ya know, be you.”

TSE: If you weren’t playing music right now what do you think you would be doing?

Mayo: “I think I would just be doing other art, which we’re kind of doing already. We love to make little collages. We did 100 handmade post cards. I’m really into acting. Just some sort of art, just because the environment I grew up in made me think whatever I would do would just be some kind of art. I never really thought much other than that. Peyton’s really good at writing and she takes amazing photos. She has an incredible collection of Polaroids.”

Bighorse: “I feel like I would probably maybe go to college for a little bit and take some writing classes. I’ve always really liked writing and I always wanted to go for an English degree or something like that. I mean I’m not bad at writing, but I could definitely be better. That’s what I would want to do if I wasn’t doing music. I honestly can’t imagine not doing music though.”

TSE: Are you excited to come to Detroit?

Mayo: “Yeah, we love playing Detroit. It’s one of the most excited, energetic crowds we’ve played to. Between every song the crowd was like ‘you’re the best, you’re amazing, play another song’ we’d say, ‘We have a few more’ and they’d say, ‘play a hundred more,’ so it was really cool.”
