“Any individual engaging in such behavior will also be prosecuted to the full extent applicable by law,”

At 9:06 a.m. on Nov. 21 the Wayne State Police Department sent out an emergency alert to all students which said General Lectures received a bomb threat that morning. Police Chief Anthony Holt said they received the threat at 8:14 a.m.

The building was evacuated and searched by the university police using “very specific bomb threat procedures,” said Holt.

By 9:20 a.m., the all-clear message was sent out and General Lectures was reopened for classes.

WSUPD arrested the student responsible for making the false bomb threat and the student is now in police custody while being processed through the jail system.

“Any individual engaging in such behavior will also be prosecuted to the full extent applicable by law,” WSUPD said in the statement sent out to students later that evening.

Holt said the student is being charged on three counts by the state: using an electronic device to make a threat and making bomb threats to two locations—both being WSU classroom buildings.

The student will be arraigned on Nov. 24.

While the motive of the student’s threats was revealed during questioning, Holt would not disclose that information to prevent interfering with due process.

Holt said that while students should come to school worry free if another threat of this degree should be made again in the future, it’s in their best interest to trust in the police force.

“All you need to do is stay tuned to the procedures we give out,” he said.

Holt main piece of advice to students: if you hear something, say something. He said that while the force does not come by threats of this caliber very often, they never take them lightly.

“We err on the side of caution,” Holt said. “Our number one objective is the validity of the threat. When we do get them, we take them very, very seriously.”

Holt recommends all students sign up for text message alerts from the police force to ensure their safety in emergency situations.
